Hello, I am Jon Kistler and I am a 20 year old Secondary English Education student here at UC. I chose to be a teacher because I love to help people and I love to teach. I love working with young adults and find it very rewarding to see people learn and grow as they mature through life. To get to know me a little better there are very few things that you need to know. First, I love soccer. Not a day goes by where I am not playing or watching a game online. Second, I love to read and write. My favorite books are 1984 and Crime and Punishment. And finally, I am a huge nerd. I love playing video games, watching movies, and reading manga. In fact, funny story about me, I was sitting in class next to a very beautiful lady and forgot that my phone volume was on. Well off goes the Pokemon battle theme music as my text alert. I look to my right to see her laughing at me. The sad part is that I was more excited by the music than I was disappointed that she was laughing at me.
Does technology make a difference in the learning process or could you teach just as well without it?
Yes, technology does make a difference in the learning process today. Students these days are used to using technology and feel very very comfortable around it, and they also draw their various forms of entertainment from technology as well. As teachers we should utilize these tools to keep the students attention which will lead to more learning.
Are students today fundamentally different than students in the past?
Students today are not as different from students in the past as we may think. Other than the increase in technology and the change in culture, the base need for education has remained the same. Not only has the need for education remained, but the base fundamentals are also similar to what they were in the past. Students are still there to learn and teachers are still there to leach. Whether we are using a projector or a blackboard, it is still education and the students are still the same. However, research has shown that the students have actually changed drastically and new and innovative ways of teaching are needed to connect with today's students.

1. http://greatgatsbygame.com/ This game is a mix of drill type game and a virtual environment. It falls into the drill type category because you learn facts about the book while using a low skill level amount of work. It is also has parts of a virtual environment because you are able to go to different arts in the book as you progress through the levels. The standard that fits well for this game is RL.9-10.7. Playing this game was a fun experience that reminded me of my younger years playing mario with my family. I am not sure that I would ever use this game in my classroom because the game is not very helpful to understanding the book. Instead, it is more of just an entertainment factor for the students.
2. http://pbskids.org/whiteboard/ The Arthur game about pollution starring Buster. This game was a drill type game that went over simple facts over and over again using a game. The ODE standard that fits this game would be EVS.912.1b. Playing this game would be a lot of fun for children at a very young age. It would never be something I would use in high school, but the games are entertaining for younger audiences.

This sight is a fake. Even from the web address you can tell that it is fake. Octopi cannot and do not live in trees. Even though the sight looks official, there are still ways of telling that it is not official. When reading the content of a web page, you need to identify if the information is correct or not. A simple google search will usually give you an answer. However, the sight is very well made. It even has a gift shop.

Dr. Angelone has given us complete freedom to be able to create whatever we want even in our assignment to teach the entire class. We were told to be creative and to find things that everyone would enjoy and feel comfortable learning about while telling us to be innovative in our style of teaching when presenting it. Every assignment for the class has required for us to think of something new that we had never thought of before. The class truly promoted, supported, and modeled creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.

Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers:

The test creator assignment is good example of just one of the varied assignments that aligned with content and technology. As teachers we will have to make hundreds and hundreds of tests and quizzes throughout our careers. These tests we will be using to inform us on how our students are doing in our class. I loved working with the easy creator tool when making this test. I had the complete freedom to make as many or as few of each type of question from essay to true/false. It was a fun way to make a test that can be given to students online or in class. I ended up writing my test about one of my favorite books Crime and Punishment. This class did a very good job of taking us out of the classroom not only in real life but also digitally. We had guest speakers come in and we even went to the CECH Library for a day. The teacher brought in other students, peers, and people from our UC community to help us better understand material and to help us learn. Even our groups on our wiki space and our diigo group digitally brought in community and students to share their findings and to promote success in our content area. I thought that there was a lot of support in this class form the community.

Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:

During this class we spent a whole week focused specifically on proper behavior as both students and as teachers online. We were even given copies of teacher and student technology contracts from a local school, which allowed us to see first hand the kind of rules that will apply to us as teachers. During these lessons I was able to better understand what is acceptable as a teacher and what is not online. I was able to learn about how even things like Facebook can cause problems for teachers if they are not careful what they post. Throughout the quarter we have been plugged into a few learning communities. The first and main one is the class itself. We are put in a room once a week with other college students that are working through the same material and have roughly the same major. Two other major ways that we were participating in learning communities was Diigo and Wiki. We had to post on these two websites every week and were able to see what others had posted as well. Being part of these communities gave each student support and ideas from other students. It was an effective collaboration of students learning together and sharing ideas and reflections.
Final Reflection
When I began this class I did not know what to expect. I thought that we would be learning about word and excel, but I was pleasantly surprised as to what we did learn. I am really glad that this class focused more on the ways that you can use technology as a teacher and was not just a class that taught the mechanics of Microsoft office. When this class began I did not know about all the resources that were available online for teachers in the classroom. I did not know that there were such helpful websites like Read Write Think and others that have free lesson plans online to help teachers. This class better prepared me to be able to handle the day to day computer work that is required for teachers.
